An early voting assistant at a polling station in Gangnam, Seoul is under investigation after CCTV footage captured her voting twice on the same day. The footage, obtained by citizen observers, shows the same woman entering the polling station at 2:21 PM, casting her ballot, then re-entering the station 22 minutes later at 2:43 PM and voting again.
Despite holding a temporary position as a contracted poll worker, the woman managed to bypass safeguards that were supposed to prevent multiple votes from the same individual. South Korea's current voting system does not utilize facial recognition or cross-referencing of biometric records to verify if a person has already voted.
This case underscores the vulnerability of South Korea’s early voting system, which has come under increasing scrutiny for lacking real-time safeguards against duplicate ballots.
